In short

  • DataDome is a mature, enterprise-facing bot management product with a long track record. This page does not argue otherwise.
  • Botscope is a younger, smaller tool built around one idea: read every request at your origin and say what each automated client is, with the evidence attached.
  • The honest split is by requirement. Managed enterprise defence and origin-level evidence are different purchases.
  • Anything either vendor tells you about the other is worth checking against their own documentation before you decide.

What this page is, and what it avoids

Comparison pages written by vendors are usually a list of the competitor's weaknesses, chosen by the side that benefits from them. This one is written differently on purpose: it makes no claim about what DataDome does or does not do. Their capabilities change, their documentation is public, and a claim here would be out of date before it was useful.

What follows is the set of questions worth asking of any bot management product, including ours, and a plain statement of where Botscope is not the right answer.

02 · what to look for in either

What to look for in either

Five questions separate these products more reliably than any feature list.

Where does it sit? A product in the request path can stop traffic before it reaches you and needs your DNS or your CDN configuration. A product at the origin sees what actually arrived and changes nothing upstream. Neither is better in the abstract; they answer different questions.

Can you see why a decision was made? Some products return a score. Others return the signals behind it. If you will ever have to explain a block to a customer, a partner or a board, the difference matters more than the accuracy figure either vendor quotes.

Does it separate categories of automation? Blocking a search engine crawler and blocking a scraper are not the same decision, and a product that lumps them into one risk number makes that decision for you.

What does it cost to try? A product you can run against real traffic before committing tells you more in a week than any evaluation document.

What happens when it is wrong? Ask both vendors how a false positive surfaces and how quickly it can be undone.

03 · where an established vendor is the better choice

Where an established vendor is the better choice

Managed defence with people attached

If you need a vendor with a response team, formal support commitments and a procurement process your security review already recognises, an incumbent in this category is built for that and Botscope is not. We are a small product; there is no managed service behind us today.

Absorbing an attack, not describing it

Botscope classifies what is asking. It is not an edge network and does not absorb volumetric attacks. If the problem is being knocked over rather than being read, this is not the tool.

Breadth of surface

Botscope watches web requests. Products in this category commonly cover mobile applications and APIs as separate surfaces with their own SDKs. If your problem is on those surfaces, check that first.

04 · where botscope is a different tool

Where Botscope is a different tool

Evidence per request

Each decision carries the signals that produced it, so a block can be explained rather than asserted.

Nothing is re-pointed

It runs at your origin. No DNS change, no traffic proxied through a third party — which in many organisations is a procurement question rather than a technical one.

You can start without asking anyone

A free tier of 100,000 events a month, no card, so the evaluation is running traffic rather than reading a datasheet.

05 · what botscope does not do

What Botscope does not do

No DDoS mitigation. No user-facing challenges or CAPTCHA. No mobile SDK. No managed service or 24/7 response team. The curated catalogue that names operators covers 1,186 agents today, out of 1,953 in the table, and grows as they are verified rather than as they are counted.

Questions

Why does this page not list DataDome features?

Because we cannot keep them accurate. A vendor comparison table is out of date the week after it is written, and the side that wrote it is never the side it embarrasses. Their documentation is public and current; ours is here.

Can both run at once?

Yes. An in-path product and origin classification answer different questions, and running both is a reasonable way to see whether they agree.

Is Botscope cheaper?

It has a free tier of 100,000 events a month and public pricing above that. Whether it is cheaper for you depends on volumes and on what you need, which is a comparison only you can run.

We are a large enterprise. Is this a fit?

Possibly not as a replacement. As a second opinion at the origin — a check on what reached the application after the edge did its work — it is a smaller decision with a smaller commitment.
